Judge Halts Anderson County Development Over Possible Slave Graves

A circuit court judge has halted the Anderson Reserve development on a former plantation along Highway 187 and Fants Grove Circle after residents sued the Anderson County Planning Commission. The judge reversed the commission’s approval of the first two phases and directed the commission to establish requirements for the developers, including determining if enslaved individuals are buried on the land. The plaintiffs offered to fund the investigation into the presence of graves, and the judge urged the commission to consider this option.
