Juneteenth Celebration in Seneca Was Big Success, says Mayor Alexander
Juneteenth fell on Sunday this year, but the country’s newest federal holiday is being observed today.
All federal offices, including the post office, the stock exchange and most banks are closed today to remember June 19, 1865 as the official end of slavery. It took more than two years after Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation was issued for the word to travel to all the enslaved peoples in the US, and was read to those in Galveston, Texas.
Seneca’s Mayor Dan Alexander said that the second annual celebration held here last week was a big success. He also congratulated Seneca PD for winning this year’s basketball tournament against the Oconee County Sheriff’s Office, who won the competition last year…
