Keep Eye on Burn Pile

As you clean around your home this summer many living in the county will choose to burn their yard debris and household trash.  Outdoor burning is against the law in the city limits but it is permitted in the county.  However, just because it is allowed does not mean that you can simply light a match on a burn pile and walk away.  Oconee County firefighter and District Fire Marshall of the Picket Post Camp Oak Fire Department TJ Harlos says keep an eye on outdoor burning.  “The biggest thing is not leaving them unattended, always have somebody there.  Rake perimeters, clear areas around the fire, keep it away from structures and other things.  But the biggest thing is be mindful and be attentive, don’t leave it for any reason.” Harlos gives the recommended time of day to start burning yard debris and household trash in Oconee County. “What we recommend is start early in the morning, so the fire is out by dusk.  People will watch them for a while, then go in, and go to bed and the next morning we are getting calls.  Watch the weather; it does not hurt to burn in the rain.  Watch the Forestry Service, they will tell you when you can and cannot burn.  Also always call your local county fire department to inform them you are burning, so that they are aware of those fires.” Please follow this safety advice for burning debris in Oconee County.  For more tips, call your local fire department.
