Lawsuit filed for Middle School Player

An accident last winter in a School District of Oconee County (SDOC) gymnasium produced a lawsuit last week in Oconee Common Pleas Court. Listed as the plaintiff is a minor child, while the SDOC is the defendant. The plaintiff seeks damages in excess of $100,000 to compensate a West-Oak Middle School basketball player who lost part of his right middle finger in an accident last winter that involved the scorer’s table. According to the lawsuit, players were required after games to move the scorer’s table to a storage area. But, the suit claims, “one or more safety mechanisms on the scoring table were broken or not functioning.” It further alleges that requiring minors to move the table was “an obviously unsafe practice.”
