The community is invited to the Salem Community Center today, March 13, at 2pm to learn the history of the DAR and the Tamassee DAR School, explains Oconee County Public Library (OCPL) Director Blair Hinson. “Come learn about the history of the Tamassee DAR School at a presentation hosted by the Salem Branch of the OCPL. The Daughters of the American Revolution was established in 1890 as a lineage society based on historic preservation, education and patriotic service. In 1919 the South Carolina Daughters of the American revolution established the Tamassee DAR School to provide mountain girls a place to obtain an education. The DAR built the first school in the Tamassee-Salem area in the 1940s. The Tamassee DAR School is a private non-profit children’s home and family service organization offering multi-faceted programs to serve children and families in crisis. It currently houses children from grades 1 through 12. The school also provides support and housing for those who graduate until they are ready to be totally independent. So come and learn more about the DAR and this great school on March 13, at 2pm.” This free program is for ages eighteen and older.
