Masks Must Be Worn on School Buses Per Federal Mandate, Says SDOC

Earlier this week the School District of Oconee County Board of Trustees met for a special called board meeting to consider the possibility of a mask mandate for staff and students in response to legal cases currently before the SC Supreme Court.

The Court considered arguments in two cases that involve the implementation of mask mandates in K-12 schools but adjourned without issuing a decision. The Board took no action at the meeting; instead expressing the desire to wait for a decision from the SC Supreme Court before considering the possible implementation of a mask mandate.

However, there is a federal mandate that has been in place since school started which requires masks be worn on buses.

SDOC Associate Superintendent Steve Hanvey said that there has been some push back from a few students, but for the most part, many are complying with the ordinance. He said that after the Labor Day holiday, those who do not comply will face disciplinary actions…
