Mountain Rest Man listed in Serious Condition after Fire

A Mountain Rest man remains in serious condition after suffering extensive burns in a Thursday, Jan. 25, morning fire in the 200 block of Cassidy Bridge Road. Oconee County Fire Chief Charlie King updates the condition of Jerry Witt. “The update that we received from the family over the weekend is that he continues to be in serious condition. They continue to treat him for pretty extensive burns and that is really all that we have. He continues to be at the Jim Still Burn Center in Augusta, Ga., being treated for injuries sustained during the fire.” Witt was flown by helicopter to the Jim Still Burn Center. Firefighters arrived on scene within minutes to find a workshop well involved in fire. The fire was brought under control in approximately 25 minutes and there were no additional injuries. Chief King says that the cause of the fire remains under investigation. The agencies operating at the incident were the Mountain Rest Fire Department, Mountain Rest Rescue, Long Creek Fire Department, West Union Fire Department, Walhalla Fire Department, GHS/OMC EMS, Oconee County Sheriffs Office and Oconee County Fire Department Investigations Team.
