NAACP HOPES FOR TRACTION ON MLK WAY PROJECT

Leaders of the Oconee Branch of the NAACP say the original banners that flew above S. Sixth Street in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. have over the years become weather-beaten and need to be replaced. Branch President Beverly Jenkins and Vice President George Anderson represented the NAACP at this week’s meeting of the Seneca City Council to request the city leaders consider replacement banners. According to Anderson, Clemson University students have come up with drawings for a new banner design that will contain quotes of the late civil rights leader. Years ago, the city committed to honor MLK by declaring South Sixth as MLK Way, although there will be no change to the street’s official name and no change to anyone’s mailing address.
