New Over-the-Counter Medication Procedures in SDOC
Parents must now complete and return the Parental Permission For Over The Counter Medication form in order for the school nurse to administer any sort of over-the-counter medication such as Tylenol, Benadryl, or cough drops. South Carolina school districts recently received a Joint Advisory Opinion from the South Carolina Boards of Medical Examiners, Nursing and Pharmacy. This opinion makes it easier for school nurses to administer over-the-counter medications for students. Parent permission will be required, but schools in the School District of Oconee County will maintain a supply of certain medications as “stock” medications to avoid having multiple supplies for many students. Parents need to sign a permission form to give consent so that the school nurse may administer these medications. Other, less commonly used over-the-counter medications can be taken to the school by the parent to be administered by the nurse for individual students. Please contact your school nurse for more information.
