Nine killed on SC Roadways over Weekend

The South Carolina Department of Public Safety announces a preliminary number of nine persons killed on state roadways over the weekend. As of Feb. 25, 115 people have died on South Carolina highways, compared to 153 highway deaths during the same time period in 2017. Locally, Anderson County lists four deaths in 2018 compared to nine in 2017 at this same time. Pickens County reports two fatalities in 2018 and four in 2017. Oconee County has experienced two traffic related deaths in 2018 compared to one in 2017 at this same time. Of the 86 motor vehicle occupants who have died statewide in 2018, 52 were not wearing seat belts. Through Feb. 25, 15 pedestrians have died compared to 20 in 2017; ten motorcyclists have died compared to 14 in 2017; and two bicyclists have died compared to four in 2017 on state roadways. These numbers are preliminary and are based on fatal collisions compiled by the South Carolina Department of Public Safety as of midnight Feb. 25, 2018.
