OC 911 educating and rehabilitating House Numbers

Oconee County residents are being asked to check their house number to ensure the reflective numbers are clearly visible from the street.  Oconee County Emergency Management director Scott Krein says these numbers play a vital role in everyone’s safety. “The purpose of these reflective signs is to help Emergency Responders find your house in case of an emergency.  Sometimes you have to locate the mailboxes to determine what way the numbers run, and then you are not quite sure which side of the road the even and odd numbers are on.  I can only imagine what it is like for Emergency Responders when seconds count and they know they are in the right area, but are unable to easily identify exactly what house they are responding to.  That is why Oconee County put into place the 911 Sign Ordinance, which requires that all houses and businesses within the county to post address number signs at the main entrance, so that they can be seen from the street, as well as being posted on a sign in the yard if the building is more than 50 feet from the street.  It is an important Ordinance that is aimed at helping us when we are most in need.” This is a simple thing that every home and business owner can and should do that can literally mean the difference between life and death.  Help is available to residents needing new reflective signs and house numbers, explains Chief Krein.  “Signs can be purchased through Oconee Emergency Services for a $20 fee that includes installation.  Call the Emergency Management office at (864) 638-4200 if you need more information.” Money raised through the sale and installation of these reflective signs and house numbers will support the Oconee County Volunteer Rescue Squads.
