OC ready to celebrate 150 Years

In 2018, Oconee County turns 150 and county staff are ready to celebrate the milestone year. Several activities are planned for the county’s year-long birthday, tells Oconee County Parks, Recreation, and Tourism Director Phil Shirley. “So, we know that Oconee County in 2018 will be celebrating our 150th birthday, so for our Sesquicentennial we have had a group working together to put together some things that we can celebrate throughout the year. We are going to have a special proclamation night on Jan. 29, where council will do a proclamation for our birthday. We also will be working to have a booth at all of our existing festivals. We’ll have a special 150 things to do in Oconee County, either a brochure or maybe even possibly a mobile app that you can go on and check off as you complete things. We’re working with Keep Oconee Beautiful Association, we’re going to present them an option to set up 150 hours of community service. We want to do some pole banners around the county. In the fall, we will finish up with a “Celebrate Oconee County Gala”, we’re working some of the fine details of that now where we get together probably a ticketed event, silent auction type thing, fundraiser for the Oconee Heritage Center to culminate the year of the Celebrate Oconee County Campaign.” This week at the annual meeting of Walhalla’s Partners for Progress, Shirley and Oconee Heritage Center Director Leslie White unveiled a banner proclaiming 2018 the 150th year of Oconee County.
