OC Sheriff’s Office releases 2018 Litter Control Numbers

In an effort to increase awareness of the litter issue in the county, the Oconee County Sheriff’s Office releases its January and February 2018 Litter Control Numbers. For the first two months of the year, approximately 5,020 pounds of litter was picked up in the county with 4,040 pounds collected by inmates serving time at the Oconee County Detention Center. An additional 980 pounds was collected during a community clean up event in partnership with the Wilderness Way Boys Camp on River Road in the Cleveland Community on Feb. 15. An approximate total of 161 bags of trash were collected during this period. During the past two months, the Environmental Services Unit answered 47 calls for service and received 14 T.E.L.L. Kobie reports and performed 6 T.E.L.L. Kobie pickups. Nine cases were also investigated during the two month period with four warning citations being issued. The Oconee County Sheriff’s Office cautions everyone to make sure to cover anything that could blow out of a truck or trailer and to not throw your litter out the window. Oconee County is fortunate to have the natural beauty of lakes and mountains. Anyone caught littering faces up to a $1,000 fine and/or being ordered to perform community service by picking up litter along roads and highways.
