OC Sheriff’s Office reminds Residents of Littering Law

The Oconee County Sheriff’s Office is reminding citizens of the upcoming recycling and landfill schedule for the Christmas and New Year’s Holidays and the fines and penalties for leaving trash outside recycling centers after hours and when closed for the holidays. The recycling centers around Oconee County and the county landfill will be open from 7am until 7pm from now until Jan. 3. The recycling centers and landfill will be closed on Christmas Day, Monday, Dec. 25, Tuesday, Dec. 26, and on New Year’s Day, Monday, Jan. 1, with a return to a normal schedule on Thursday, Jan. 4. “If trash is left outside the gates of the recycling centers during the Christmas and New Year’s holidays after hours or when closed, it is illegal,” according to Corporal Brandon Meadows, Environmental Services Officer with the Sheriff’s Office. “If the Sheriff’s Office can prove with evidence that someone left trash and litter where it does not belong outside of the gates, they will be issued a citation and they are subject to a fine of $1,087.50.”
