Oconee County Council Approves First Reading Of Original School District Of Oconee County Budget

(Seneca, SC)——————————-Oconee County Council held their regular council meeting last night in council chambers on Pine Street. During the meeting, Council issued a proclamation recognizing The Westminster News and The Keowee Courier as well as receiving an award presented to the County by the South Carolina Association of Counties for a 2018 Outstanding Safety Achievement Award presented by the South Carolina Workers’ Compensation Trust.

Council also approved mutual aid agreements in the first and final reading between the County and Franklin, Habersham, Hart, Rabun and Stephens counties in Georgia and Jackson and Transylvania counties in North Carolina in regards to emergency and disaster response and recovery.

Council also approved on first reading the budget for the School District of Oconee County for the 2020 Fiscal Year that was based on the original budget delivered to County Council. At their meeting Monday night, the School Board of Trustees indicated that they would more than likely be requesting a 1-mill tax increase to help cover a budget shortfall.

The 1-mill increase would amount to around $410,000, according to Davis. The proposal would be part of the second reading of the School District budget at the next County Council meeting on May 7th. Davis said that there was some concern to Council in regards in regards to using money from the fund balance.
