Oconee County Council Meets Tonight

Oconee County Council meets tonight, Tuesday, May 5th at 6:00 PM in the Council Chambers in Walhalla. On the agenda are proclamations honoring the Walhalla High School Girls Basketball Team, National Day of Prayer, and Peace Officers Memorial Day. Council will consider buying a new Kubota tractor for the airport, hear a presentation from the Appalachian Council of Governments, and handle several budget transfers.

Lawmakers will hold a public hearing and third reading on an easement for Blue Ridge Electric, along with first readings on the FY 2027 county budget and tax levy, a museum lease, and a new 911 agreement with the City of Seneca.

A key item is a proposed development moratorium, requested by District 3 Councilman Don Mize, that would temporarily halt new construction of planned subdivisions with more than 10 residential units. The measure comes amid concerns over the rapid proliferation of large housing developments, especially along and near Wells Highway in Mize’s district.

The meeting also includes committee reports, board appointments, and an executive session. The public is invited to attend.
