Oconee County Sheriff’s Office Warns of Ongoing Scams

The Oconee County Sheriff’s Office recently reported a concerning increase in scam attempts, highlighting two prevalent schemes.

In one instance, an individual narrowly avoided a scam where callers impersonating “Captain Stevens” and “Lieutenant Dean McFarland” (both of which are fictitious) from the Sheriff’s Office attempted to extort money for a fictitious warrant, instructing the victim to purchase gift cards for payment. Fortunately, the potential victim grew suspicious and went to the Law Enforcement Center, where a deputy confirmed it was a scam.

Additionally, the Sheriff’s Office received reports from local businesses targeted by callers claiming to be law enforcement or Department of Revenue officials, who attempted to trick employees into revealing cash on hand or making unusual electronic deposits.

The Sheriff’s Office emphasizes that legitimate law enforcement will never demand payment for warrants, especially via gift cards, and urges businesses to verify any suspicious calls directly with management and never disclose sensitive financial information.
