Oconee Joint Regional Sewer Board Discusses Funding for System Improvements

The Oconee Joint Regional Sewer Authority (JRSA) board reviewed an outside consultant’s analysis on how to fund sewer service improvements over the next decade. Much of the work is considered “catch up” for the aging system, which is around 45 years old. Potential options include expanding the Return Church Road treatment facility or building a second plant as demand increases. However, the board expressed concern over funding, with outside attorney advice urging caution on taking on debt. Consultant Daryll Parker suggested raising sewer rates by up to 75% over two years, though both Parker and Angie Metlen from WK Dickson emphasized that this increase was not a recommendation. Chairman Kevin Bronson voiced concerns about the potential for rate hikes to create financial hardship for residents.
