OCONEE LITTER SITUATION

The top litter officer for the Oconee Sheriff’s Office, Zachary Owen, stayed busy in 2019. Corp. Owen responded to 440 complaints—a sign there’s little let up to the county’s continuous problem of people who litter, whether by accident or on purpose. Inmate labor last year scooped up more than 37 thousand pounds of trash and litter. The Sheriff’s Office this year will continue initiatives to reduce the problem. They include the next Great Oconee Cleanup April 18 and the second Litter Bowl competition between the high schools during football season. Another effort is the tarp-it or ticket campaign in which deputies issue citations and free tarps to drivers whose trash is not properly secured. You can report litter and trash violators by calling the sheriff’s non-emergency line at 638-4111.
