OHC offering Teaching Trunks

The Oconee Heritage Center in downtown Walhalla is reaching out to area schools by offering teaching trunks.  This is a way to bring the museum to students, says Oconee Heritage Center curator and director Leslie White.  “It is a great way to outreach to the schools.  We have many field trips that come to us but we know that is not always possible for everyone and so, we wanted to have something available to bring to the teachers and trunks are something we have been working on.  We have two available now, one of Textile History and the other focuses on the Civil War.” White tells what comes in the teaching trunks. “What you get is a trunk with lesson plans that are very flexible to all grades; obviously teachers know ho to cater to their students with activities and things.  In addition, replicas or authentic artifacts that we feel are appropriate to the lesson that kids can handle as well as documents, USB drives with extra information and resources.  It is really a total package that teachers can rent.” The teaching trunks are free to rent, concludes White. “Right now we are renting them for free as we kind of beta test them.” For more information on renting a teaching trunk, call the Oconee Heritage Center at (864) 638-2224.
