Prescribed Burn planned for OC

The U.S. Forest Service and Oconee State Park will be conducting a prescribed burn today, March 5, in the upper part of Oconee County. This burn will encompass 480 acres. Those living in the Salem area may see and smell smoke. This is Prescribed Fire Awareness Month in South Carolina. Prescribed burns reduce wildfires, enhance wildlife habitats, and keep the nearly 13 million acres of forestland in South Carolina healthy and productive. Prescribed burns can’t stop all wildfires, but they are considered the best management tool available to prevent larger and more frequent fire outbreaks.
