Rabies Found in Pickens and Spartanburg Counties, Says DHEC

The Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) confirmed that a skunk located near Hosta Lane and Turner Hill Road in Easley, SC tested positive for rabies. Two pets were exposed and will be quarantined as required in the South Carolina Rabies Control Act.

The skunk was submitted to DHEC’s laboratory for testing on August 28th and was confirmed to have rabies on August 31st. This skunk is the second animal in Pickens County to test positive for rabies in 2020.

DHEC also confirmed that a grey and white, female cat located near Woodside Lane and Crest Road in Campobello, SC tested positive for rabies. Two people were exposed and have been referred to their healthcare providers.

The pet cat was submitted to DHEC’s laboratory for testing on Aug 27th and was confirmed to have rabies on Aug 28th. There have been 106 cases of rabid animals statewide this year.
