Recruiting and Retaining Best Teachers

It is that time of year again, as the school years wraps up, school administrators start planning for next year.  The most challenging thing for administrators is recruiting and retaining teachers, explains Oconee County Schools Superintendent Dr. Mike Lucas.  “I’ve been so many classrooms and seen some phenomenal teachers and our goal is to make sure that we keep holding on to those very best teachers and that we recruit the very best too.  So, one of the critical elements is making sure that teachers feel supported at the school, especially by the principal and that is one of the things that we work on to make sure that those support systems are there.” The School District of Oconee County will be recruiting new teachers this week, explains Oconee County Schools Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources Earnestine Williams. “One of the things that we have coming up is we will be recruiting at Clemson University, they have a big job fair that starts Wednesday afternoon.  We will be signing folks up to interview and then we will have a big interview day on Thursday there at Clemson.  I will be taking eight principals with me to schedule interviews.  We are looking for math and science teachers, that is a critical need because we don’t have a lot of college students that are majoring in education in those particular areas.  We also need Spanish, special education, business, early childhood and elementary teachers.”  To learn more about jobs available in the School District of Oconee County, visit their website at www.oconee.k12.sc.us.
