SC has Nation’s Highest Rate of Women killed by Men

South Carolina has earned another dubious distinction.  According to a new report from an organization devoted to stopping gun-related deaths, the Palmetto State ranks first in the nation in the rate of women murdered by men. South Carolina had 61 women killed by men in 2011 with a per capita rate of 2.54 per 100,000 women. That rate is more than double the national average. The Violence Policy Center report has ranked South Carolina among the 10 highest states every year for the past decade. The annual report is released to coincide with Domestic Violence Awareness Month in October and covers homicides involving one female murder victim and one male offender. The Violence Policy Center says it relies on data from the FBI’s unpublished Supplementary Homicide Report. The new report applies to 2011, the most recent year for which data is available.
