SCDOT Announces Extensive Bridge Closures and Repairs

The South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) reports nine bridges in Pickens County are currently closed for repairs, with Lay Bridge Road closing in 2022, Walhalla Highway Bridge in 2024, and the remaining seven, including two last week, in 2025. The Crowe Creek bridge near Lake Keowee partially collapsed reportedly due to a heavy truck ignoring weight limits, and over 100 other county bridges have load restrictions.

The State Transport Police are responsible for monitoring these restrictions, and while the structurally deficient Old Seneca Road bridge was a high priority for replacement, its repairs are now expected to exceed two weeks, with the Crowe Creek Bridge not slated to reopen until mid-2027.
