SCHSL monitoring Hurricane Irma

The South Carolina High School League (SCHSL) has been monitoring the developing situation with Hurricane Irma. At this time, it is entirely too early to know what impact the storm will have on our state during the next 48 hours. With SC Governor Henry McMaster declaring a state of emergency and school buses being put on stand-by for evacuation, there may be some challenges with football games this Friday and other fall sports contests the first part of next week. While the SCHSL knows that the state will potentially be impacted by this storm in some capacity, it does not know the totality of the impact at this time. With that knowledge, the SCHSL encourages the following: If possible, consider rescheduling football games that may be affected this Friday. Make contact with your opponents for any Swim, Volleyball, Tennis, Golf or Cross Country contests scheduled for this weekend and next week to discuss options you have for rescheduling later in the season in the event you cannot play the contest as scheduled. “The safety and wellbeing of our student athletes, school personnel and fans is crucial. South Carolina and much of the east coast is well versed in storm preparedness due to the past several years of extreme inclement weather. I have full confidence in our member schools to make decisions that serve the best interest of students and communities,” states SCHSL Commissioner Jerome Singleton. The SCHSL realizes that no concrete decisions can be made until the storm has passed, however at this time, it is in alert mode and asks that you make plans on the front end in the event the storm alters athletic schedules in the next week.
