SDOC 2020-2021 Instructional Options: Parents must pre-register each student by Tuesday, July 14th

In mid-June, SDOC families completed a “2020-2021 Reopening of School Survey” in order to gather information about whether parents were comfortable with their children returning to school for face-to-face instruction.

Results from the survey support that the school district should provide both a traditional face-to-face instructional model and an “at-home” option for students during this time of uncertainty.

Option 1: Face to Face SDOC will offer a traditional face-to-face instructional model where students will attend school in-person. Safety precautions can be viewed in the document linked here. Chorus, band, strings, JROTC, or courses at the Hamilton Career and Technology will only be available with this instructional model. Please understand that masks will be required to be worn by students on buses, in common areas and in most
classrooms. Refusal to wear a mask will result in disciplinary actions which could include the student being sent home from school. Parents need to be prepared to switch quickly from face-to-face instruction to all distance remote learning if conditions related to COVID-19 make that necessary.

Option 2: SDOC At Home Remote Instructional Model The district will also offer a remote instructional model called “SDOC At Home.” This option will look similar to a regular school day with live instruction throughout the day. Details and sample daily schedules for each level, as well as additional details for special education students, are available on the district website. Unlike other online education options, SDOC At Home allows students to be taught by an SDOC teacher, facilitates a smooth transition back to a traditional learning environment, and allows students to still earn a diploma from their local high school. Families should consider the following information when making a decision for their students to participate in SDOC At Home:

• Sample instructional schedules are linked here. Final schedules may look different. Students will receive daily
remote instruction from their teachers.
• Parents must commit to their student(s) being a full-time remote learner for the entire 2020-2021 school year.
• SDOC will provide a device, but families must provide both reliable internet access and learner support.
• Attendance will be taken for all remote classes, and participation is mandatory. Students must comply with state
attendance requirements.
• If any of the above requirements cannot be maintained, a student will need to be moved to the traditional option.

SDOC parents will be required to complete a brief pre-registration form for each of their students by Tuesday, July 14th. Completion of the form is mandatory and will require parents to commit to the instructional option they want each SDOC student in their family to participate in for the 2020-2021 school year.
