SDOC Board Approves Budget First Reading, Advances Weapons Detection, and Celebrates Achievements

The Board also took decisive action to implement in-school weapons detection systems, directing administration to obtain official pricing for Open Gate devices for all middle and high schools, Oconee Academy, and the career center, citing survey results indicating staff and parent interest in enhanced safety measures.

The meeting also featured a presentation on the recently implemented Centegix safety alert badges, which are operational in most schools and have already been used successfully, and included special recognitions for the Oconee County Sheriff’s Office’s new K-9 officer and the Walhalla High School State Champion Girls Basketball Team, alongside highlighting School Library Month and featuring Keowee and Walhalla Elementary Schools in the School Highlights.

Superintendent Dr. Michael Thorsland provided updates on student activities, a town hall, and the testing calendar. The Board also announced the hiring of Mrs. Lindsay McKay as principal of Orchard Park Elementary for the upcoming school year.
