SDOC Board approves Policy Revisions

Revisions to two policies were made by the Board of Trustees for the School District of Oconee County (SDOC) at their meeting Monday night. The policies deal with background checks and field trips, explains Steve Hanvey, Assistant Superintendent of Operations for the SDOC. “In the past we have done State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) Background checks and now we are using a program called BIB and the schools are doing it. It is a little bit more extensive check. So, folks can get there, go online, they can do that and get a card that shows that they are cleared to volunteer or participate in field trips for up to two years at a time before they have to renew that card. So, we had to change the language around in both the background check part and for the field trips as far as chaperones and volunteers for that. We are more comfortable with the check that we are doing now and we feel good about that process and we just wanted to get that in Board policy.” Both policies were approved on second reading by the Board.
