SDOC Board Chairman Jerry Lee Passes Away

The School District of Oconee County released a statement on the passing of School Board Chairman Jerry Lee:

“We are aware of the passing of Mr. Jerry Lee, our school board chairman.  We are incredibly sad for Mr. Lee’s family and all those who knew him.  Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife Donna and the entire Lee family.

Just this past January, Mr. Lee was recognized by the SC School Boards Association for 30 years of board service.  Mr. Lee joined the SDOC Board of Trustees in 1978, serving sixteen years before leaving.  He rejoined the board in 2006, serving continuously until now.  He served as vice-chairman for 10 years before being named chairman in November 2018. Mr. Lee has had a positive impact on Oconee County schools for decades.  Recently, he was instrumental in the decision to build both a new Walhalla High School and Hamilton Career and Technology Center.

When asked about Mr. Lee, Dr. Thorsland said, “Jerry was a man of integrity. He cared deeply about students, teachers and all of Oconee County. He wasn’t afraid to push us and share his opinion if he thought something needed to change, but he was also incredibly supportive. He truly might have been the perfect school board member. We have lost a great man and a strong community leader. His presence and leadership will be missed. Our hearts hurt and our prayers are with Donna and the rest of the Lee family.”

The district does have a policy in place to fill board vacancies prior to the end of a term.  That will be discussed at the next school board meeting.  Our current focus is on supporting and encouraging Donna and the Lee family as they grieve the loss of Mr. Lee.”

A funeral service in memory of Jerry will be held on Saturday, October 3, 2020, at 4:00 PM, at College Street Baptist Church. Graveside services will be private. Visitation will be held from 6:00-8:00 PM, Friday, October 2, 2020, at Davenport Funeral Home. Mask are required to attend the services. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to College Street Baptist Church in Walhalla.
