SDOC Inclement Weather Policy
Now that winter weather has started to move into the area, the School District of Oconee County is reminding parents and students about the inclement weather policy. On mornings when the weather is treacherous, have students ready to be picked up on time, but be prepared that the bus may be running behind because of the weather. Treacherous whether includes heavy rain, fog, ice, and snow. Oconee County Schools Assistant Superintendent Dr. Michael Thorsland tells more about the School District’s inclement weather procedures. “We do try to be careful and make sure our roads are safe. There are five of us that ride different parts of the county, we get up at 4am on mornings when it is questionable and get out and actually check the roads ourselves. We work with law enforcement as they have people out over night; they help us make those decisions.” Parents can also stay up-to-date online, adds Dr. Thorsland. “We also have what is called PowerSchool, which is our student database and there are ways that parents can stay connected with their students by enrolling and signing up at their school to get updates from teachers. They can log in and see their student’s grades on a real time basis as soon as a teacher grades a test and puts it into the computer, they can log in and check and see those grades. So, that is probably the most important way that we can communicate with parents and keep them informed.” The decision of a closure or delay because of weather is made, if possible, prior to 6am. Parents and students are encouraged to listen to local radio and TV stations for announcements regarding cancellations or delays.
