Seneca Council approves Rezonings and Annexations

Two property matters highlighted Tuesday night’s meeting of the Seneca City Council.  The first dealt with second reading for the rezoning and annexation of property at 15680 Wells Highway, explains Seneca Mayor Dan Alexander.  “On Wells Highway where the new gas station is.  It is on the corner of 4th and Wells Highway.” That property on Wells Highway was rezoned highway commercial.  The other property matter concerned the second reading for the rezoning and annexation of 336 Maple Grove Road.  Mayor Alexander says this property was rezoned RM-16, which is a multi-family zoning classification.  “It is a totally different type of zoning than commercial.  It is residential and multi-family, so you are looking at apartments or town houses there.” Both rezoning and annexation requests were approved by the Seneca City Council.  Mayor Alexander said the city has received several annexation requests in the past two years.  “This year and last year we have had several annexations, so we are glad for that.  I know Seneca Planning and Development Director Ed Halbig and his department have worked real hard with developers trying to recruit them inside the city limits.” A major factor in the increased number of annexations is the fact that the City of Seneca approved Sunday alcohol sales, which allows restaurants, gas stations and grocery stores to sell beer and wine on Sunday.  Seneca is the only city in Oconee County that allows Sunday alcohol sales.
