Seven killed on SC Roadways over Weekend

The South Carolina Department of Public Safety announces a preliminary number of seven people killed on state roadways over the weekend. As of Sept. 16, 2018, 701 people have died on South Carolina highways, compared to 702 highway deaths during the same time period in 2017. Locally, the South Carolina Department of Public Safety lists Anderson County with 32 in 2018 and 29 in 2017. Oconee County has experienced 13 traffic fatalities in 2018 compared to 9 in 2017 at this same time. Pickens County reports 12 in 2018 and 16 in 2017. Of the 486 motor vehicle occupants who have died statewide in 2018, 247 were not wearing seat belts. Through Sept. 16, 2018, 108 pedestrians have died compared to 102 in 2017; 72 motorcyclists have died compared to 85 in 2017; and 13 bicyclists have died each of the past two years on state roadways. These numbers are preliminary and are based on fatal collisions compiled by the South Carolina Department of Public Safety as of 11:59pm on Sept. 16, 2018.
