Severe Storm Threats

SPC's Day 1 Severe Weather Outlook graphic for South Carolina

South Carolina faces a double threat of severe thunderstorms, with the first round expected this afternoon and evening, fueled by an upper-level disturbance, bringing risks of locally damaging winds and large hail statewide, with a low-end tornado risk in the Upstate. While initial supercell development is possible, the primary concerns are significant hail and straight-line winds, potentially consolidating into a damaging squall line later; residents, especially along and north of the I-20 Corridor, should monitor warnings and secure property. A second wave of severe thunderstorms is anticipated Friday afternoon and evening with the arrival of a cold front, again posing a primary risk of damaging winds and hail across most of the state. This will be followed by an extended period of wet weather starting Saturday, potentially easing drought conditions but with risks of localized flooding and gusty thunderstorms.
