Shelters Opening Saturday in Oconee County

Due to the anticipated severe winter weather, Oconee County is opening emergency warming shelters for individuals and families in need, starting Saturday, January 24th, and continuing through the duration of the event. The following locations will be open and staffed:

  • West Oak Middle School
  • Seneca Middle School
  • Walhalla High School

Community members who may be impacted—whether from power outages, dangerous travel, or prolonged cold—are encouraged to seek shelter at one of these locations as needed. No pets are typically allowed at warming shelters, and rules prohibit drugs, alcohol, or weapons; bring any necessary medications, personal items, and supplies if possible.

Oconee County Emergency Services is opening a temporary warming shelter at Walhalla High School (4701 North Highway, Walhalla, SC 29691) starting at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 24th, due to prolonged below-freezing temperatures from the incoming winter storm. The shelter will welcome men, women, and children (no pets allowed), with no drugs, alcohol, or weapons permitted, and it will also serve as a medical needs shelter for those requiring medication or supplies. Residents with special needs or questions should call Oconee County Emergency Services at (864) 638-4201.
