SHS offering help with the FAFSA during College Application Month

This is College Application Month and Seneca High School (SHS) is encouraging every senior to apply to at least one school during October. A major part of applying to college is filling out the FAFSA or Free Application for Federal Student Aid. To assist with this SHS is holding two FAFSA Workshops this month, explains SHS Guidance Director Cari Carter. “The first one is on Monday, Oct. 15, 2018, from 3-7pm. We are inviting parents to come in, they can bring their tax information. We encourage them to get their FSA IDs at www.FAFSA.ed.gov before they come in for that. Each parent and student has to have an ID. If they have that information and they have their tax information there will be an expert there to help them work through the FAFSA and actually complete it in that workshop and it is a drop in event.” SHS also holds a FAFSA Workshop on Oct. 30, 2018. Every student needs to fill out the FAFSA, continues Carter. “It is necessary for students to complete the FAFSA to receive any type of federal monies from colleges. In addition, there are many college who award their own financial aid based on the FAFSA, so they also require it before they will award any type of financial aid from the college. So, it is a really important thing. It opened Oct. 1, 2018, and we recommend that students get the FAFSA done. For our seniors who will be starting to college in the fall of 2019 we recommend that they have that done sooner rather than later because college can’t award monies until the FAFSA is complete. So, we highly recommend that they do it by the end of December or January at the latest.” First get the FSA ID at www.FAFSA.ed.gov and bring your 2017 tax information to the free FAFSA Workshops at SHS on Oct. 15, or Oct. 30.
