Sidewalk Work for Walhalla; Mayor Gets Support for New Award

Sidewalk repairs in Walhalla are set to begin this week on Main Street, starting at North Tugaloo Street, with sections being replaced up to Cedar Street over the coming weeks.
City Administrator Celia Myers advises the public to exercise caution around the construction area, as the project aims to ensure a safe and walkable city through a $400,000 C-Fund from Oconee County. Despite one bid from HGH Construction totaling $569,246, the council is exploring ways to cover the shortfall, potentially using American Rescue Plan Act funds or requesting additional C-Funds. The council agreed to proceed with current funds and prioritize the most hazardous sidewalk sections.
Additionally, Mayor Tim Hall received support to create the annual John A. Wagener Award, honoring individuals or organizations that advance the city. The award, named after a founder of Walhalla, includes a $1,000 prize and a plaque, with nominees needing to demonstrate benefits to the city and residents.
