South Carolina Reports First Pediatric Flu-Related Death
The South Carolina Department of Public Health (DPH) has announced the state’s first pediatric flu-related death this season, involving a child in the Upstate Region, amid widespread flu activity with 25 flu-associated deaths reported as of January 3, 2026 (season starting September 28, 2025). Dr. Linda Bell extended condolences and urged everyone 6 months and older to get vaccinated against flu, COVID-19, and RSV, as the shot provides the best protection after about two weeks. With multiple respiratory viruses circulating, DPH recommends vaccination (available simultaneously at pharmacies, clinics, or DPH sites by calling 1-855-472-3432), masks, handwashing, and staying home when sick.
