Statewide Red Flag Fire Alert Issued for South Carolina
The South Carolina Forestry Commission has issued a statewide Red Flag Fire Alert effective at 6 a.m. on Wednesday, April 8, to strongly discourage outdoor burning due to elevated wildfire risk caused by ongoing rainfall deficits, intensifying drought across much of the state, gusty winds exceeding 20 mph, and relative humidity dropping below 25 percent in some areas.
These conditions make fires likely to escape control and spread rapidly, with additional hazards from heavy fuel loads of downed trees and debris remaining from Hurricane Helene, especially in western parts of the state, which can increase ignition potential and hinder firefighter access.
Fire managers note that wildfire potential is typically higher this time of year and encourage citizens to voluntarily postpone any outdoor burning, monitor recent burn sites for possible rekindling, and exercise extra caution if burning proceeds. Although the alert does not impose a statewide ban on outdoor burning, it may activate certain county or local ordinances that restrict fires, so residents should check with their local fire department for any applicable rules.
The alert will remain in effect until lifted by the Commission as conditions are continuously monitored.
