Support Local Agriculture; buy a Bumper Sticker

Help support Oconee County’s number one industry by buying a bumper sticker.  The Oconee Soil and Water Conservation District, organized in 1938, has been involved in the protection and wise use of the county’s natural resources for over 70 years.  They are now selling bumper stickers to raise awareness and support of their cause, explains Oconee Soil and Water Conservation District manager Eddie Martin. “Those bumper stickers are $3 a piece and that goes back to the Oconee Soil and Water Conservation District to help us do our education programs and things like that.  It is just another aspect of support but you are also supporting the farmers here in the county who produce fiber for your clothes, wood for your houses and food for your table.” The Oconee Soil and Water Conservation District works in partnership with the USDA-Natural Resources Conservation Service and the SC Department of Natural Resources to accomplish its three-fold mission of providing technical and financial assistance to install conservation practices on private and public lands; promoting sustainable agriculture; and educating the public about the wise use of natural resources.  Agriculture is vitally important in a rural community like Oconee County, adds Martin. “Agriculture is $93 million and growing, that is the dollar amount, two years ago, that agriculture put into the Oconee County economy.  Agriculture is the largest manufacturing aspect in Oconee County now.” If you would like to purchase a $3 bumper sticker to show your support for the Oconee Soil and Water Conservation District, visit their office behind the Lutheran Church in downtown Walhalla or simply call (864) 638-2213.
