Take an Emergency Plan when exploring the Great Outdoors in OC

Oconee County is known as the “Golden Corner” because of its climate, its lakes and the Blue Ridge Mountains. Oconee County offers several outdoor activities to enjoy like biking, boating, whitewater rafting, paddling, fishing, hiking, camping and golfing. Before you start enjoying the great outdoors, Oconee County Parks, Recreation and Tourism Director Phil Shirley says make and take an emergency plan. “We have so much to do. Whether you are hiking, biking, camping, at a park, checking out history, scenic sites, historic sites, there is so much to do here. My advice is always going to be make sure you plan ahead, make sure that if you are going on a hike, if you are going down the river, if you are going tubing or swimming, make sure someone knows where you are going, when you are supposed to be back and make sure that you have a plan. A lot of our trails are much longer than people think they are, a lot of our floats down the river last much longer than you think they do and in talking with our Emergency Management guys that is a common thing, people just don’t realize how long it takes you to get from point A to point B. So, we want you to enjoy the resources that are here, but was want you to plan and be safe by making sure that you have an emergency plan in place.” To learn more about fun outdoor things to do in Oconee County, visit www.experienceoconee.com or www.visitoconeesc.com.
