Thank a Veteran

This year marks the 99th commemoration of Veterans Day in the United States of America. It was first called Armistice Day, but since 1954, Nov. 11, has been known as Veterans Day. Oconee County Veterans Affairs Director Jerry Dyar encourages the community to thank veterans for their service. “The greatest thing I think we can do and say to our veterans, look them up and just give them a pat on the back and a hand shake and tell them that you appreciate what they have done for their country. Regardless of what the sacrifice was we can never repay these men and women for what they have done over the years to keep this country the freest nation in the world; almost 250 years that this country has been a free country. That can’t be said about any other country in the world and we owe it to the men and women who have worn our military uniforms in peace time and in war time. So, look for those veterans up through the Veterans Day holiday period and pat them on the back and just say thank you and really mean it when you say thank you for what you have done and for what yo offered to do for our country while you were wearing our military uniforms. Trust me that makes our veterans happy and feel really appreciated it, it really does.” There are over 7,500 veterans living in Oconee County. Thank you for your service and sacrifice for this country and its freedoms.
