Three killed on SC Highways over weekend

The South Carolina Department of Public Safety announces three people were killed on state roads and highways from Friday, June 7, at 6pm until Sunday, June 9, at midnight.  As of June 9, 291 people have died on South Carolina highways, compared to 373 highway deaths in this same time period in 2012.  Locally, Oconee County reports one highway fatality in 2013 compared to seven in 2012 at this same time.  Pickens County lists seven in 2013 and eight in 2012.  Anderson County has experienced a sharp decline in the number of highway fatalities with 11 reported in 2013 compared to 20 in 2012 at this same time.  Of the 204 motor vehicle occupants who have died statewide in 2013, 121 were not wearing seat belts.  Through midnight June 9, 32 pedestrians, 43 motorcyclists and 5 bicyclists have died on state roads and highways. These numbers are preliminary and are based on fatal collisions compiled by the South Carolina Department of Public Safety as of midnight June 9, 2013.
