Training the Next Generation of SC Workers

Making sure that the next generation of workers in South Carolina are properly trained for careers in high-tech manufacturing, State Senator Thomas Alexander of Oconee County is working hard in Columbia on legislation aimed at the future. “We’ll we’re certainly working on economic development and job training, not just technical colleges but there are a lot of other good paying jobs out there. So, we’re working with the Technical College System to make sure that they have the programs in place that will help folks that want to get into certain careers have that opportunity. I think the other message that the Governor had that I would like to echo is from the standpoint that the manufacturing jobs today are very high-tech and a great environment for folks to work. So, if they are interested in that area or if their children are interested in that area they really need to be encouraged from that standpoint. We’re working on the budget for next year already and making sure certainly that we have a climate that makes small businesses successfully and continue to be successful in South Carolina. So, I think we will be continuing to work on other issues really around the education component. That is really the foundation and the apprenticeship programs are another thing that South Carolina is becoming a leader in to making sure that individuals can go into a job and get some training and some experience before they even take that job. So, we’re being recognized from that standpoint as well.” Alexander has been serving citizens of Oconee County in the State Senate since 1994, before that he served in the House of Representatives from 1987 to 1994.
