Update on New Walhalla High School

The record rainfall this summer caused the delay of several building projects in the Upstate of South Carolina.  In Oconee County, the City of Walhalla recorded its wettest summer in decades and that has put construction on the new Walhalla High School 45-days behind schedule, explains Oconee County Schools Assistant Superintendent Dr. Michael Thorsland. “We have been working on that since the spring and look forward to working on it for another 18-20 months.  With the wet summer that we had, I think Trehel has stated that they are about 45-days behind just because of the rain.  The last three weeks have been great and they have been doing a lot of catch up work.  Probably greater than 50% of the floor slab has been poured now and of course if you drive by you can see walls going up and door frames being installed, so they are catching up.” However, Dr. Thorsland does not expect this summer’s rain to delay the opening of the new Walhalla High School.  “We still anticipate opening in August of 2015.  The 45-day delay has not delayed the opening of the school, we still anticipate opening when the Board intended to.”  The new Walhalla High School is being built on the west side of Highway 11, one mile north of the Highway 183 intersection and a little more than three miles from the existing high school on Razorback Lane.  School District Officials say the new facility will house 1,200 students with room for growth.
