Use Caution while Picking up Litter

With warmer temperatures, more people will be cleaning their property and picking up litter. The Oconee County Sheriff’s Office cautions residents about potential dangers that could be discovered. Recently, a deputy from the Uniform Patrol Division responded to Johnny Cox Road near Westminster and met with two citizens who were picking up trash along the road, whereupon they discovered two syringes and a bag of what appeared to be methamphetamine. The syringes and the bag of narcotics were safely disposed of by the deputy and the deputy thanked the citizens for handling the situation appropriately and to contact the Sheriff’s Office in the future should anything else arise and deputies would be happy to respond. The deputy weighed the contents of the reported methamphetamine seized, which came out to around 1.542 ounces. “We are asking our citizens to use caution as they pick up litter and clean up their property after the winter,” says Oconee County Sheriff Mike Crenshaw. “Any item that looks suspicious near the road or on your property should be reported immediately to law enforcement and that includes syringes, two-litter drink bottles that appear to have a sandy or dirty looking substance in the bottom due to the fact that the bottle could contain a shake and bake style meth lab and backpacks or any bags that you think look suspicious. With the concerns of Fentanyl and its analogues being mixed with and combined with other narcotics, there is a danger to you by touching or inhaling these materials so do not touch or get close to anything that looks suspicious. Once again, contact your local law enforcement agency immediately for safe removal and disposal of those items.”
