Walhalla Planning Commission Offers Recommendation to City Council

At their meeting last night, the city of Walhalla’s planning commissioners voted to recommend allowing retail stores of more than eight thousand square feet floor space, but confining them to office commercial, highway commercial, and light industrial zoning districts, and not in residential zones. Other conditions include off-street parking and conformity to downtown design guidelines.

The planning commission action is only a recommendation to the city council, which has enacted a temporary moratorium against new small box stores, after protest arose over Dollar General’s efforts to put a store on Main Street. Some of that protest was echoed again at the meeting by a handful of residents and members of the business community.
