WATCHDOG GROUP LEADER SPEAKING ON RE-DISTRICTING

A voter watchdog group called last night for South Carolina state lawmakers to resist any attempts to manipulate political boundaries that protects one party over another and keeps certain incumbents in power. Addressing the Oconee Legislative Delegation, Sandra Gray of the League of Women Voters spoke out against the practice of gerrymandering and called for the creation of an independent statewide commission to re-draw boundaries, based on the results of this year’s census. Oconee’s three state lawmakers took Gray’s remarks as information, although later Senator Alexander urged the meeting audience in Westminster to be sure they are counted as citizens when the nation this year conducts the 2020 population census. Much of the dollars that the feds return to the states is based on population numbers.
