Westminster Library to celebrate Frankentober

At just 18-years of age, Mary Shelley took a ghost story she had created during a competition between herself, her husband Percy Shelley, and poet Lord Byron and turned it into the world famous Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus. First published anonymously in 1818, Frankenstein was the first novel of its kind, what later would become known as science fiction. In celebration of this historic novel, the Westminster Library is hosting Frankentober, a month long celebration with free events for all ages. “Frankenstein has survived for 200 years,” says circulation assistant Patsy Smith. “Even if you haven’t seen one of the numerous movies or read the book, you know what Frankenstein’s monster is.” Events for the month include movie showings like Frankenweenie, the 1931 version of Frankenstein, and the Bride of Frankenstein. There will also be adult craft programs and teen craft programs where they can make Frankentoys. Frankentober will conclude with a non-Halloween Franken Friday Kid’s Party. For dates and times of all the events visit or call the library at 864-364-5760, view the online calendar at www.oconeelibrary.org, or find the events on the library’s Facebook page.
