Winter Storm Watch Issued for Upstate SC and Surrounding Areas
The National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg has issued a Winter Storm Watch for portions of northeast Georgia, the Piedmont and western North Carolina, and the Upstate of South Carolina, effective from Saturday morning, January 24 at 7:00 AM EST through Monday afternoon, January 26 at 1:00 PM EST.
Heavy mixed precipitation is possible, with total snow and sleet accumulations of 1 to 3 inches and ice accumulations of one-half to one inch. Significant ice buildup on power lines and tree limbs could lead to widespread, long-lasting power outages—potentially lasting days in some areas—and make roadways treacherous or impassable, severely impacting the Monday morning commute.
Highest snow and sleet totals are expected north of I-40, while the greatest ice accumulations are forecast across the southern mountains of North Carolina, northeast Georgia mountains, and South Carolina mountains.
Residents should monitor updates from the NWS, consider delaying all travel, and if travel is unavoidable, drive with extreme caution while carrying a winter storm kit with tire chains, booster cables, flashlight, shovel, blankets, extra clothing, water, first aid supplies, and other essentials in case of stranding.
